I am going to tell you in two words how to meet more people and become more interesting. This philosophy will help you no matter where you are in the world or what you are doing.
I have recently read long posts on travel blogs explaining how to be more interesting and I find them to be a bit much. You do not need 1,500 words to teach you how to be more interesting. Those posts are written for the search engines. You need two words to tell you how to become more interesting.
In order to be more interesting, you need to……
That’s it. Be interested in other people. Ask them questions. Listen to their stories. Take a general interest in where they are from, what they are doing and what they have to say. Do not be afraid to talk about yourself, but be sure to give them the spotlight.
At the end of the day the most interesting story to any one person is their own. As humans, ours is the only story that we truly know. When someone takes the time to learn more about our personal story, we find them captivating because they are interested in what we are interested in.
Yes, taking the time to develop a new hobby will give you something new to talk about at your next dinner party. Reading a new book will definitely provide a new perspective and give you more knowledge that you can use to contribute in conversation. Saying yes to events you might have never considered will, at the least, give you a story or two to tell.
But all of these things are focused on giving you something more to talk about. They ignore the other person. Actively listening and becoming a good question-asker is more important than all of these things combined. Instead of focusing on yourself, think of ways that you can focus on the other person. You will be amazed at the results.
So that’s it.
If you want to be more interesting, be interested.
